Home Recipes Smoothies and Drinks Fabulous Friday FACT: Beets and Lemons Clean Your Liver!

Beets and lemons are really good for you, of course they are as they are whole foods.  Lemons are tricky to get into your diet without excess sugar to get it down.  Beets can be a challenge as well as many dislike the “earthy” taste they have.  But both are especially helpful for cleansing and detoxification the liver.

The liver is the organ that removes most of the toxins from your body, which we all know overwhelm our body.  Toxins from the environment, food, prescription medications, cleaning products, etc…are constantly taxing our livers.  Think of your liver as a big strainer removing out all the toxins that flow through your body.  If not properly taken care the liver can be like an overfull strainer, you know when you dump all the noodles in a once and it just kind of sits there all murky and then slowly drains, the liver does the same thing.  Beets and especially the oil in the lemon rind are particularly important to cleansing out of the toxins allowing the liver to be clean and strain toxins through it easily so it doesn’t get like that murky strainer!  I love beets and lemons in combination!  I do it a few different ways, I will share my personal favorite today!

This is a recipe for “MY” favorite smoothie- only 3 of my kids like it, but I love it!  (I will put the one my kids like below!)

Mom's Favorite Detox Smoothie
Recipe type: Smoothie
  • ½ an organic lemon
  • ½ an organic beet
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 2 T. flaxseed oil
  • 1 scoop protein powder ( I use Ultimate Vegan or Garden of Life)
  • ½ c. coconut milk (carton or can are both fine)
  • ½ c. organic apple cider
  1. Put all ingredients into a blender and puree to smooth! I do use a vitamin to grind up those whole veg/fruit to smooth!

The organic apple juice cleans out the gallbladder as well!  This is the one my kids really like, it is not quite as intense as mine, but still gets the job done!
Kids Detox Smoothie

  • 1 c. organic apple juice
  • 1 c. frozen blueberries
  • ½ c. frozen raspberries
  • 2 frozen ripe bananas
  • 3 T. beet juice (you can juice your own or buy it at the store)
  1. Put all ingredients into a blender and puree to smooth!

As spring approaches we think of spring cleaning our homes.  If you study seasonal eating, the foods that come around in the spring:  spring greens, beets, berries, etc…are very “cleansing”.  Maybe this is a sign that spring is also a time to clean out our bodies a bit as well!  This smoothie is a great start!  Enjoy!
